In documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the football club said it will sell 16.7 million shares at between $16 and $20 each.

The club had earlier explored the possibility of a $1bn flotation on the Singapore stock market.

The club has been controlled since 2005 by billionaire US sports investors the Glazer family.

The Premier League giant is listing on the New York Stock Exchange.

United, among the best-supported clubs in the world, has said it plans to use the proceeds to repay debt.
