Cillit Bang firm Reckitt Benckiser sees sales rise

Reckitt Benckiser, the consumer goods firm that makes Gaviscon and Cillit Bang, has seen a better-than-expected sales rise after changing its strategy.

The firm boosted sales by 4% in the first three months of this year, ahead of analysts' forecasts of 3.8%.

It said key factors were a new focus on emerging markets and the launch of new products.

New chief executive Rakesh Kapoor said the firm was on track to achieve its 2012 targets.

Reckitt's share price rose by as much as 0.9% on the news before falling back slightly.

Mr Kapoor, who took over in September last year, aims to deliver half of the company's sales from such countries as Brazil and China by 2016.

He said in a statement: "These results give us the confidence to reiterate our 2012 target of like-for-like net revenue growth of 200 basis points above our market growth rate of 1-2%."

Mr Kapoor added that he was confident the company would maintain its full-year operating margins, although sales were down by 2% in Europe and North America.

Growth has come from products such as Veet, an easy wax roll-on hair remover product, and Lysol, a no-touch kitchen system disinfectant. Products such as Dettol, a disinfectant, and condom brand Durex also played a role.
