
Japan's retail sales and household spending rose in April indicating that domestic demand in the world's third-largest economy may be picking up.
Retail sales jumped by 5.8% from a year earlier, while household spending rose by 2.6%.
Japanese policymakers have been trying to boost domestic consumption in a bid to offset a slowdown in export growth.
Japan's export sector has been hurt in recent times by a slowdown in key markets such as the US and Europe.
