Growth in the US economy falls back in first quarter

US GDP

The pace of US economic growth slowed to 2.2% in the first quarter of the year from 3% in the last three months of last year, official figures show.

The US Commerce Department said businesses had ciut back on investment but a pickup in the car market supported the growth figure.

The department's advance estimate showed gross domestic product (GDP) grew at a 2.2% annual rate.

The figure was below economists' estimates of growth of 2.5%.
