Warren E. Buffett says he has received a diagnosis of prostate cancer, the longtime Berkshire Hathaway chief disclosed in a public letter to shareholders on Tuesday afternoon.
Mr. Buffett wrote in the letter that the disease is in stage I and that he has been told by doctors that it is “not remotely life-threatening or even debilitating in any meaningful way.”
The diagnosis came last Wednesday, and he underwent several tests on Thursday and on Tuesday. They revealed that the cancer has not spread beyond his prostate.
“I feel great – as if I were in my normal excellent health – and my energy level is 100 percent,” he wrote.
Mr. Buffett wrote that he will begin two months of daily radiation treatment in July, limiting his travel.
The disclosure of his illness will likely stoke speculation over who will succeed him as chief executive of Berkshire. In February, Mr. Buffett, who turns 82 this summer, told investors for the first time that he had selected a successor, but did not name the candidate.
